More Day 1 Photos

Here are some more photos from our first day of exploring and learning a lot about our interests, without even leaving the neighborhood of our hotel!

We visited the Scientific Nursery, about a ten-minute walk from our hotel. Lots and lots of ornamental plants – clearly Bangalore residents are interested in gardening. But no edible plants. We heard this again from the staff person at the organic store – she explained that some people are interested in composting to help the growth of their “kitchen garden” but this refers not to herbs and veggies, but flowers and decorative vegetation. Why don’t they grow vegetables? Her theory is simply lack of know-how and the initial work required. This seems to us like an untapped opportunity!

A shot from above of one of our hotel’s balcony gardens. They’re growing banana, guava, pomegranate, melon, and other fruits and vegetables, and have plans to expand onto the rooftop soon.

John examines the “Easy Indoor Composters” at the Era-Organic Store. The staff person explained that they are popular with local housewives who want to do their part to help address Bangalore’s waste management challenges.
